It's already unique. The boards are styled different, it's out of the ordinary and more.

Different style doesn't make forum unique. Something that no (or small number) forum has it makes it unique, for example some features that no other forum has.

Trust me, exchanging posts can get you true activity because after people see that your forum has lots of posts and members and is looking very good, they will join.

You should definitely try some exchanges, it boosts activity and can attract genuine members after a while, it's all just a waiting game (along with work).

A style doesn't make it unique, 90% of forums have different styles from one another, what makes it unique is the way it's run, the content and exclusive or seldom seen features that interest people.

A 'real' domain would also go a long way to help in growth, whether or not it is the case, visitors will see you as more commited and professional towards the site.

What you're sayin' isn't really true. Only forums which owner gives up die after the domain is bought, because half of the webmasters expect that they'll get massive visit now that they have a TLD.

If you buy a TLD and stay active as you were before the forum shouldn't die that easily.

It costs me $12 a year for a domain and something around $70 for 24 months of hosting, I really don't think that will send anyone broke. Anyway, it all depends on your circumstance and how much you are willing to put into the site. Sites don't fail, their owners just stop trying.

I'll probably sign up to your site at some stage, but not right now. I'm incredibly busy with moving house and got alot of other work going on.

I agree, getting a domain will not get you broke plus you can get donations from members or find some way to earn the money back and you are using a free forum host anyway.
